Doechii - Jaylah Hickmon, from Tampa - was the first woman signed to Top Dawg Entertainment, the label behind Kendrick Lamar and SZA. Alligator Bites Never Heal (2024), a mixtape rather than an album, won Best Rap Album at the 2025 Grammys, making her only the third woman ever to take that category. "Anxiety" won Best Music Video a year later. She told Gay Times in 2024: "I think I've always been gay. I always knew I was gay. I'm currently bisexual." Her Tiny Desk set is the performance that turned her from rapper's rapper into a star.
