What is Young Royals about?
Prince Wilhelm is sent to Hillerska, an elite Swedish boarding school, after a nightclub video embarrasses the palace. There he meets Simon, a scholarship student from the nearby town who is already out, already unimpressed by the aristocracy, and not interested in being anyone's secret. Their relationship runs straight into the monarchy, the school's inherited class system, and the fact that a leaked video can end a life. Across three seasons the Swedish series does what most teen shows will not: it treats the institutional pressure as the real antagonist and lets both boys be difficult about it. Edvin Ryding plays Wilhelm as a kid drowning in duty, and Omar Rudberg plays Simon as someone with a clear sense of his own worth, which is what makes the conflict actually hurt. The final season landed an ending that is neither a fairy tale nor a punishment, and that is harder to write than either. If you only know Heartstopper, this is the sharper, sadder, better-acted cousin.
Three seasons and it never once treats being out as a plot device. The ending earns itself.
Young Royals: what we know
The series concluded with its third season in March 2024. Creator Lisa Ambjörn has said the story is finished, so treat season three as the ending.
